I just had to get over the style choice first. I’m not sure I’d call it a twist, but the reveal toward the end was quite nice and made the story even better. Daisy, Camilla, and Karen were all pretty fierce in taking control of their lives, so I’m here for it. And I must say, I really liked the girls of this story. There’s a lot of tension between Billy and… everyone. It is loosely based on Fleetwood Mac and is full of all the sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll you’d imagine it to be. That was annoying at first, but I got used to it and got over it. It’s written in an unusual style, as though interviews from members of the band, their team, and other voices who would know something about the topic are all spliced together to tell the story. (Check out my show comparison review here.) I wasn’t expecting to like it since I’m not a big 70’s fan, but this book pleasantly surprised me.ĭaisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid tells the story of a band’s rise and fall throughout the 1970’s. I picked up the book because I had the opportunity to watch the Daisy Jones and The Six TV adaptation before its release, and I felt like I should probably read the book first. I can’t decide if this is a ‘Bookstagram made me do it’ read or not.

The threshhold of believability is less for fantasy novels than for science fiction. The Snow Queen would have been better as a fantasy novel. I had not read the fairy tale until after finishing Vinge's Snow Queen, but after having read it, some of the more puzzling episodes in the novel make sense: Vinge was compelled to write them to mirror the events in the fairy tale. Willing suspension of disbelief only goes so far. The hokey mish-mash of coincidences stretched my belief to the limit and beyond. This is unfortunate: the plot is the weakest part of Vinge's novel. Vinge's The Snow Queen parallels closely the plot of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale of the same name. It’s an immersive novel, and readers will leave with a clear understanding of not only big, historical moments but also the details of everyday life and chores. Gudrid is instantly a compelling character, and Brown’s elegant, lyrical writing reflects the historical context of this novel, firmly embedding Gudrid into a time when even mildly independent thoughts were considered scandalous for a girl, let alone brazen intelligence and daring. Ignoring the fact that she is promised to one man, Gudrid chooses her own mate, travels as she wishes, and is generally a fearless woman in a place and time where most women lived a life of drudgery and acquiescence. An author’s note describes the mix of legends and true stories that Brown used to write her fictional account of Gudrid, a Viking woman who sought a world beyond the gendered expectations for women 1,000 years ago. It helps you to digest what is happening a piece at a time, so that you can gain clarity, safety, and freedom. My son’s life was cut irreversibly short, but his love lives on forever. Just because it might make you uncomfortable, doesn’t make him matter any less. Our culture isn’t so great about hearing about children gone too soon, but that doesn’t stop me from saying my son’s name and sharing his love and light everywhere I go. I love my child just as much as you love yours– the only difference is mine lives in heaven and talking about about him is unfortunately quite taboo in our culture. I want to speak about my deceased child as normally and naturally as you speak of your living ones. I want to say and hear his name just the same as non-bereaved parents do. Just as parents of living children unconditionally love their children always and forever, so do bereaved parents. There will never come a day, hour, minute or second I stop loving or thinking about my son. |
